RED

November 07, 2010

I have no idea why, but people sure love to compare "Red" with "The Expendables", as they both contain former action stars kicking butt way past their prime. While "Red" still has action scenes just like "The Expendables", I can assure you that they are quite different. Click "Read More!" for the full review.

THE PROS:

The main difference between the 2 movies is that "Red" is actually a action-comedy film, so yeah, there's bound to be lots more laughs when watching this movie, as compared to the full-on action that is "The Expendables". The story's about a retired CIA agent (Bruce) who picks up a bunch of old friends to find the people behind some recent killings, and Bruce is on the hit list.

The special effects are top-notch, but there isn't a lot of it in the movie. Gun fights are aplenty, and the fight scenes are epic (IT IS an action movie, what do you expect?). That one scene at the containers was the most epic of all (2 words: BAZOOKAS and GRENADES). The part where Willis walks out of a spinning police car (I think it's in the trailer) is simply put, amazing.

The acting? The best has to be John Malkovich, who plays the cocky Marvin Boggs in the movie. I think that he's the only one in the movie who can provide the laughs and the action together, which Bruce Willis (action) and Morgan Freeman (laughs) fail to do. Another character that stands out is Helen Mirren, who plays former M-16 agent Victoria. What "The Expendables" lack is a female retiree who can handle massive guns, and Mirren plays that part perfectly. Surprisingly, Karl Urban plays quite well as CIA agent William Cooper.

THE CONS:
While I may like the story, I just find it tedious at times. Bruce is constantly talking about the same thing to people ALMOST ALL THE TIME, people like me are sure to be a tad annoyed by it.

Onto the actors, Bruce Willis is only sub-par (I'll only give it 65%) as well, I find his acting a bit fake, like he's just pretending when he's acting like an amateur, and it shows. I have no idea why Freeman is considered a main character, as he appears in only half of the film, but his scenes are still memorable.

Another thing is, why does Mary-Louise Parker, who plays Willis love interest Sarah, look so calm and collected all the time. She's a customer service agent, come on! She doesn't seem frightened or shocked of all the guns and explosions, and well, not disturbed when an unknown man who you only met on the phone suddenly comes to your house (STALKER ALERT!).

CONCLUSION:
Don't get me wrong. Though I don't like some of the acting, I still had a blast from the start till the end. If you could ignore the cons, you're gonna have lots of fun watching this movie. Want an alternative than is less serious than "The Expendabes"?

"Red" is the movie for you.
