Inception
August 12, 2010
Remember in my Toy Story 3 review, I stated that I'll nominate TY3 as the best movie of 2010?
Well move over Toy Story, cause Inception just blew you out of the water! Directed by Christopher Nolan, who directed many mind-bending movies before this (also directed The Dark Knight, my favourite movie of 2008), this could possibly his best work yet. Click "Read More!" for the full review.
THE PROS:
This movie is near perfect in my opinion. The story is so gripping and thrilling, especially the concept of infiltrating a dream in a dream (layers of dreams). Simply put, the story is about this guy, Dom Cobb, who specializes in stealing info from people's mind, has been tasked to plant info in someone's mind. The character's journey from one dream to another to reach the innermost layer of the dream is exciting, action-packed and jaw-dropping.
The best thing about this "dream in dream" concept is how upper layer of dreams affect the lower layers. Example: if the dreamer's body is in mid-air, all objects in his/her dream would become zero gravity. Awesome stuff.
Parts of the story is also quite emotional, such as parts involving Cobb and his deceased wife who constantly tries to sabotage his plans...... in his dreams 0_0
Nolan has also chosen the best cast for his movie. Much of the main cast are a part of Dom Cobb's "Dream Team" (geddit?). Leonardo DiCaprio displays an almost flawless performance yet again in Inception, while Ken Watanabe's performance is admirable, and his English is pretty fluent too! I particularly the those scenes with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy, as they both provide some comedic sense into the movie, but don't get me wrong, these 2 actors aren't just here for the funnies, they're both capable of kicking butt (especially in their individual action scenes).
Story, actors... oh yeah, the special effects. Prepare to see buildings get crumbled, bases exploded and cities destroyed. The flooding scene at an early part of the movie, where Cobb just stands before it in terror right before he woke up from the dream was amazing stuff.
THE CONS:
As I said, the movie is near perfect, so there's not much to write in this section. Some might say that the plot is not understandable, but you'll have to really concentrate while watching the movie, or else you might end up losing the plot during the later stages of the movie.
SUMMARY:
I may have have said it already, but I'm gonna say it again. Inception is the Movie of the Year. It's one of the only movies which is not a sequel, not a remake, and not based on a comic/book/video game. The story is original and exciting, the casts are talented and most importantly, the logic of dreams is simply mind-blowing. What else can I say?
If you still don't understand the plot, watch it again. Christopher Nolan's Inception is well worth your money.
96/100
P.S. The music for the Inception trailer is absolutely stunning, have a listen:
