Alice in Wonderland
April 06, 2010
Tim Burton, famous for films such as Batman (the 1989 one), Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, is back with a movie adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice. And this time, Tim's joined the 3-D bandwagon. Click "Read More!" for the full review.
THE PROS: It's obviously a Tim Burton film when you first look at the trailer, with its dark and eerie setting, which I find quite lovely. The characters too are modified to look weird and odd, like the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter). To me, the altered setting compared to the classic Disney Alice in Wonderland was what really pulled me to watching the movie, as it felt fresh and something just plain awesome. The cast are a brilliant lot too, as they all did a very good job at playing and staying true to their respective characters.
THE CONS: It may be different to Lewis's original story, but the movie's plot is very, very obvious, like this: [SPOILER START] Alice falls through hole, revisits everyone, becomes the chosen one, slayed the mighty beast, everyone's safe and happy [SPOILER END]. The 3-D in the film doesn't work. There's only a few scenes which really show some 3-D work, but they're not like Avatar's amazing 3-D. There are some parts of the film which was really unnecessary, like what the Mad Hatter did at the end of the film (You'll know what I mean if you watched the film ;-) ), I'm pretty sure that part was actually just for laughs but to me it wasn't and that really dumbed down the film for me.
SUMMARY: If it weren't for the gorgeous setting and the brilliant acting, I doubt I'll be liking this film very much. It's not groundbreaking like Avatar, but it's still worth a watch, especially with kids.
