Movie Review 2013 (Part 3)

June 20, 2014

Initially envisioned as a trilogy of reviews, due to the number of new movies the author has watched since then, a more appropriate Part 4 will now be needed. At least it's more appropriate than Transformers 4. It's already approaching the half-year mark, so I'll just be leaving this Part 3 draft published here, like a sorry half-baked cake. Probably never doing a yearly review again.

Alan Partidge: Alpha Papa

Yet to be released in the States (due April 2014), Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa brings back to the long-time radio/TV character played by the incredible Steve Coogan. The movie's humour is reminiscent of some of the best British comedies around now, which might be a problem for those unaware of the British culture.

We're the Millers

Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston return from Horrible Bosses, which includes hilarious supporting roles from Nick Offerman and Ed Helms. Also: NO RAGRETS.

Elysium

From the director of the entertaining District 9, the movie was also hampered by a disturbing and sometimes rather annoying performance by Shartlo Copley, who was such a class act in District 9.

Kick-Ass

Pales in comparison with Matthew Vaughn's original.

Rush

A retelling of the greatest F1 rivalry in the seventies, seeing classic F1 vehicles and the hair-raising noise is a joy. While the movie was Chris Hemsworth displaying charms with his role as James Hunt, the movie inevitably shines on Nicki Lauda, played brilliantly here by Daniel Bruhl (even the austrian accent is top notch). A must-watch for F1 fans.

Gravity

Gorgeous effects slightly blighted by some weak acting, which gets even funnier which Neil Degrasse Tyson's physics debunking of the film.

Captain Phillips

Thrilling and engaging. Also: I'M THE CAPTAIN NOW.

Escape Plan

It's Arnie and Sly together in a movie that isn't The Expendables! Surprisinly fun to watch, but the movie plays out like a straight-to-DVD prison escape film, or a B-movie with a strong cast which also includes Sam Neill and 50 Cent. Speaking of B-ish movies...

Machete Kills

Now here's a movie that fully embraces the B-movie concept. Don't watch this movie expecting Oscar quality, as it treads along many cliches from the typical B-movie genres. It's actually pretty fun to watch A-listers (is Danny Trejo considered an A-lister?) And a bucketload of stunt casting (Lady Gaga pretty much appears for barely 5 minutes) Also: MACHETE DON'T TWEET.

Thor: The Dark World

This movie has shifted from the promise of a post-Avengers Thor epic to "The Loki Show". Gets more boring with every rewatch (it was fun the first time though).

Last Vegas

An old-man's Hangover this is not. While seeing old men enjoying Vegas like they were back in their heydays, the antics get pretty tedious and boring, and the unnecessary senior love triangle holds back the fun.

The Wolf of Wall Street

If three-hours of sex, drugs and cussing is too much for you, look elsewhere (by the way, it's awesome).
