Sherlock Holmes

December 30, 2009

Sherlock Holmes finally arrives in cinemas with Robert "Iron-Man" Downey Jr. (I know the middle name thing is crap, but I'm crap at that kind of thing) playing as detective Sherlock Holmes. So does Guy Ritchie's film adaptation do any justice for Arthur Conan Doyle's famous fictional British detective? Click "Read More!" for the full review.

The pros: This ain't your father's Sherlock Holmes. Guy Ritchie's adaptation displays loads of dark moments, which is a far cry from the old shows. The story's good too, about how Holmes and sidekick Dr. Watson try to unravel a mystery of a man who rised from the dead after being executed. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law's portray of Holmes and Watson respectively is marvelous (But the characters do show signs of "something more than just friends", disturbing). The fight scenes are good too, with the fight at the under-construction Tower Bridge being one of the highlights in the movie.

The cons: Sherlock Holmes fights? From my memories of watching Sherlock Holmes on TV I don't remember him actually fighting! And isn't Holmes supposed to be a fancy and clean type of person? Robert Downey Jr. instead plays the opposite of the original character, being somewhat rough and carefree. It just doesn't really capture the true Sherlock Holmes we know and love (well not a lot of people know and love him). And the end of the movie was a tad too rush, with the end of the movie progressing faster than the other scenes.

Summary:
Very enjoyable movie people who have never read/heard of Sherlock Holmes (personally I've never read any of the books :S), but those who read the entire book series might think "What were the story writers thinking about when they were writing the script?"

86/100
